In the spring of 1963, my dad was finishing his senior year of high school. His entire childhood had been spent in Morgan City, a small bayou town in south Louisiana. A few weeks before graduation, he was asked to attend a dance in the neighboring town of Plaquemine, about an hour away. One of his classmates, a girl named Louise, had a friend who lived there. The friend had extended an invitation, and Louise asked my dad to be her date and go along for the ride. They drove on what was then a dusty two-lane road, winding through the swampland and cane fields, arriving at the friend’s house in early evening, where they joined her family for dinner. My dad had never met any of these people before—about a dozen of them, seated around a long table, one of whom would turn out to be my mother, at the time just a freshman in high school.

This was how my parents first met.
